Myanmar - Five Trees Estate - Black Ruby

Black Ruby is a rare award-winning, black tea of distinction grown in the highlands of Mogok, Myanmar, a country better known for gems than tea. Grown organically and laboriously hand-crafted by the Mogok Tea Company in the Five Trees Tea Garden, the tea is a reflection of excellence of quality of taste and of survival and rebirth. It won the prestigious Gold award at The Leafies 2022.

The tea is comprised of curled up long dark brown and golden leaves with fine tips possessing a strong visual texture. They are pan-heated, rolled, and sun-dried with minimal mechanical intervention. This gives rise to an immensely scented black tea possessing a fruity and naturally sweet flavour.

Its dry leaf emits a warm, sweet pine nut, citrus peel, and blackberry jam aroma with an oakwood undertone. Infused, the tea is golden amber in colour and overflows with candied orange and honey flower scent. It is brisk and full-bodied in flavour with toffee, dried fruit, and fresh woody flavour undertones. There is a fresh citrus aftertaste and floral undertones in successive infusions.

Like the rubies that gave this tea its name, it is a precious gift of prosperity from the land and "Yoke Ka Zoe", the area's guardian spirit - one that reflects a shift from extraction to cultivation. Black Ruby honours the richness of its origin not through what is taken, but through what is nurtured and shared.

This tea can be infused at least three times, with each infusion bringing deeper layers of flavour, and passionate tea lovers may even find further complexity on each brew. Use hotter water for subsequent brews and adjust brewing time for desired strength.

Also excellent cold brewed overnight by having 8-12g of tea in a 1 litre jug of water placed in the fridge over 15 hours. Adjust quantity to taste.
